White on White

June 29, 2020

One of my favorite colors is white. I like the subtle tone differences within the color palette. I also enjoy the fresh, clean look of white images. Don’t get me wrong-I love a myriad of colors and shades, I am also drawn deeply to black and the strong darkness that comes with it. But today I am in the mood for white on white with splashes of color.

The idea for this photo is to show the waves of beautiful flowing petals and the detail of those petals that sometimes gets overlooked. I like all different styles for photographing flowers; everything from tack sharp to super soft. My mood and/or the flower usually decide how I will photograph it. Sometimes there will be an interesting part of the flower that will grab my eye. Other times, I will be drawn to the color or flow of the flower-whatever it is, I use that as an inspiration to create.

Capturing every bit of detail within a frame can lead to chaos for the viewer—they have no idea where to land their eye or what your intended point of view is. There is just too much in focus, too much sharpness, too much the same… however, there are times when sharpness is needed. I try my best not to make it a sharpness contest. I think of overly sharp flowers and I usually cringe—they lose so much of their beauty.

Do you have a white on white flower you would like to share. Tag me on Facebook and share your white flower image, I'd love to see it! BTW-it was nice to see everyone’s triptychs on Facebook!
